Portonovo

Portonovo, a municipality of Ancona and well known seaside resort of riviera del Conero, perfectly integrates with the territory of the homonymous mount Conero. It can be reached from a road going down to the sea along the slopes of the mountain. During the medieval period, as witnessed by the small church of Santa Maria of the XI century and mentioned by Dante in the XXI canto of the Paradiso, it was inhabited by some monks. Walking along the beach it is possible to see the guard tower, built in '700 to defend from the pirates and the ‘fortino napoleonico’ (blockhouse) of 1808, today a famous hotel.
