Rosora is located on a hill among Mergo, Poggio, San Marcello and Castelplanio. The remarkable steep aspect of the eastern part (the altimetric difference of level is of about 250 meters) allows a wide view on the external hills up to the Adriatic sea. The real castle was built inside a mainly sandstone area with a plio-pleistoceic origin. The toponym probably comes from Rasorium or Rosorium or Rasa area, to show a place where something has been razed or more simply, the barren and bare nature of the site.
